Giving Back Through the FOCUS Program

The mindset of "It will never happen to me" is a common belief among teenagers when they are warned about the dangers of speeding, drunk driving, not wearing seatbelts, or engaging in distracted driving like texting. However, the reality is that motor vehicle accidents among teens have become alarmingly prevalent. ThedaCare is committed to changing this statistic through its FOCUS program (formerly known as P.A.R.T.Y. at the P.A.C.).

Every year, over 5,000 sophomore students from local high schools participate in the annual FOCUS program held at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center (P.A.C.). This program aims to establish a personal connection with teens and make them reflect on the real-life situations they encounter on a daily basis. By combining real stories shared by survivors with a realistic accident simulation, FOCUS helps young drivers understand the potential consequences of risky behaviors.

As the pioneering program of its kind in the United States, FOCUS receives funding from the Theda Clark Medical Center Foundation, as well as generous contributions from community sponsors. Lamers Racing Driving Experience has been a steadfast supporter of the program since 2009.

FOCUS is a collaborative effort involving the Trauma Center at Theda Clark Medical Center, local firefighters, law enforcement officers, independent physician specialty groups, emergency medical technicians, attorneys, and courageous survivors who volunteer to share their stories and give a human face to the statistics.

The ultimate goal of the FOCUS program is to reduce the number of teenagers who engage in high-risk behaviors during their high school years and beyond. The decisions made by these young individuals have a profound impact on their health and overall well-being. Through education, awareness, and personal connections, FOCUS strives to empower teens to make responsible choices and prioritize their safety on the road.
